GURUGRAM: The MCG has set a deadline for the project to revive ponds under its limits at June 30, 2022.
There are 50 ponds in the civic body’s jurisdiction as of now. Of these 50 ponds, five ponds have already been revived and the work on five other ponds has started. A senior official said the work will be completed before next monsoon and the ponds will be recharged with recycled water.
“The ponds will be desilted, cleaned and recharged with recycled water. Moreover, trees will be planted around these ponds. These water bodies will help recharge ground water in the surrounding areas,” said Subhash Yadav, nodal officer of MCG’s environment and sustainability wing.
A meeting of MCG officials was also held recently to discuss the project. It was decided that the work should be done before the next monsoon so that water runoff from rains could be diverted to ponds.
The MCG official said there were 37 ponds in the civic body’s limits earlier, according to the revenue records. However, with the extension of MCG’s limits in December 2020, around 13 more ponds were added. Asked about the estimate of expenditure on rejuvenation of one pond, the official said around Rs 50 lakh will be spent.
Ponds located in Badshahpur, Ghata, Gwalpahari, Chauma, Jahajgarh, Tigra, Darbaripur, Begampur Khatola, Nathupur, Bandhwari, Subhash Nagar and Sihar among other MCG areas will be revived, according to the corporation.
The official also said additional land available at the pond sites will be developed into parks. For example, he said there are around five acres of land earmarked for a pond in Subhash Nagar. Of these five acres, one to two acres will be utilised for developing a park.
