McFadzean returns as Johnson makes one Sunderland change to face Hull

Lee Johnson made one change to the Black Cats side that started last weekend’s goalless draw at Northampton Town.

Callum McFadzean – who missed the trip to Sixfields as he was feeling the after-effects of Covid – returned to the side, with Tom Flanagan dropping out.

McFadzean slotted in his natural left-back position with Dion Sanderson, who had taken on that role at Northampton, shifting into central defence to fill the gap left by Flanagan.

Neither Flanagan nor Jordan Willis were included on the bench, with U23 centre-back Ollie Younger named amongst the subs instead.

Hull City boss Grant McCann also made one change, in his case to the side that beat Charlton Athletic last weekend.

Reece Burke was included in the starting XI in place of Hakeeb Adelakun.

Former Sunderland skipper George Honeyman was also in the Tigers’ starting line-up.

SAFC: Burge, McLaughlin, Wright, Sanderson, McFadzean, Power, Leadbitter, Scowen, Diamond, Wyke, McGeady

Subs: Matthews, Maguire, O'Brien. Gooch, Embleton, Graham, Younger

HCAFC: Long, Burke, Smallwood, Wilks, Eaves, Honeyman, Emmanuel, Jones, Fleming, Greaves, Docherty

Subs: Ingram, Coyle, Elder, Slater, Lewis-Potter, Mayer, Magennis
