McDonalds and Starbucks to open Bradley Stoke drive-thrus ‘in August’ despite opposition

Work is set to begin on two new fast food outlets in Bradley Stoke next month, and will be complete in August.

McDonalds and Starbucks are set to open drive-thru restaurants at Willow Brook shopping centre after they were granted planning permission on appeal in 2020.

Building work for the new restaurants will begin in early February, and will last for around six months.

Willow Brook Centre manager Andy Wynn said: “It has been a long road to get to this point, with further delays caused by Covid-19.

"However, we are all excited to see work finally get underway and look forward to seeing customers enjoying both new units in August.”

The shopping centre confirmed to the Bradley Stoke Journal that Waves hand car wash, which operates in the shopping centre car park, had vacated, to allow for work on the drive-thrus to begin.

A spokesperson said: “Waves have vacated the space at Willow Brook as part of our preparations to begin building works for Starbucks and McDonald’s, which are scheduled to begin early in February and last for around 6 months.”

“We are working on plans that we hope will provide space for Waves to return later in the year.”

The scheme will also see two extra units built and the existing car park rearranged.

The developer’s plans for a McDonalds and Starbucks were rejected by South Gloucestershire Council in March 2019, on the grounds that they would cause increased noise, litter and traffic problems.

But Brookmaker Limited Partnership was eventually granted planning permission on appeal, after an inspector found there was no good reason to refuse the application.

The inspector acknowledged residents’ concerns but concluded that the two new fast food outlets, which will lie close to a number of residential streets and schools, would not create “unacceptable living conditions” in terms of noise, disturbance, odours or fumes.
