McDonald's worker, 100, says 'no way I'm going to retire' as she celebrates birthday

A McDonald's employee who spends three days a week working in one of the food chain's restaurants has turned 100 - and said she has "no plans" to retire yet.

Ruth Shuster, an employee at Irwin, Pennsylvania ’s Big Mac, has been working for McDonald's for 27 years, meaning she started there when she was 73.

The new centenarian - who turned 100 on Wednesday - said she enjoys working part time at the branch, wiping down tables and greeting customers.

Ruth celebrated her 100th birthday while surrounded by colleagues, family and friends, with staff going all-out to ensure she was honoured the right way, Triblive reports.

The branch's staff dressed her in a red robe and introduced a Ruth Shuster bobblehead doll to add to its display case.

McDonald's management, including corporate executives, also ensured they were involved in making Ruth feel as special as ever as they broadcast their wishes to her via video.

One of the videos featured mascot Ronald McDonald singing "You Are My Sunshine' , a famous tune of the 1940s and which she is used to singing with her McDonald's crew every Friday.

“No way I’m going to retire," she said. "I love it here. I like my job, meeting people."

Her colleagues have set up a mailbox at the branch's location for her to mark the special occasion - meaning anyone who'd like to wish Ruth a happy birthday can do so by posting to 9061 Lincoln Hwy, North Huntingdon, PA 15642.

Speaking before her birthday on March 3, she said the 100-year milestone was "just a number", she told WTAE.

Ruth has been working ever since her husband died 50 years ago.

"I've been working ever, ever, ever since and I like working," she told the news outlet.

"I never had a lot of money but I always had enough, that’s the way it is."

Michael Delligatti, who owns the franchise where Ruth works, said customers will line up so they can be served by her.

"Ruth is a very special lady,” Triblive quotes him saying, before he added: “If you didn’t know Ruth, she made you feel like you’ve known her for all of your life."
