McDonald’s wins fight to ban sale of Scottish brand of foods called McVegan

McDonald’s has won a legal battle to ban the sale of a Scottish brand of foods called McVegan.

The fast-food chain uses the McVegan name for a range in European countries but has not yet used it in the UK.

When businessman Philip Perseval tried to register it as a trademark, the company called in lawyers to block the move.

Perseval, 73, of Paignton, Devon, said he wanted to launch a range of health foods using Scottish produce and that sales would be used to help families affected by cancer.

He also said he wanted to create a character called McVegan for a children’s book and cartoon series set in Scotland to help promote the brand.

However, McDonald’s accused him of trying to cash in on their fame and obtain money from them.

The UK Intellectual Property Office, which rules on trademark disputes, has now decided in McDonald’s favour and said the name cannot be registered.
