McDonald's walk-in takeaways to remain closed in Scotland - despite reopening elsewhere in UK

McDonald’s walk-in takeaway will remain closed in Scotland due to current lockdown restrictions.

The fast food giant today announced plans to reopen branches in England, Wales and Northern Ireland for walk-in takeaway on February 22.

Enhanced safety measures will be introduced at all restaurants in a bid to protect customers and workers while the more-transmissible ‘UK variant’ of the coronavirus continues to circulate around the country.

But the plans have not been extended to Scotland as a result of the country’s stricter measures on takeaway services.

Hospitality services in Scotland can still offer food and drink takeaways through a drive-thru or hatch, but customers cannot enter the premises under any circumstances.

Items can only be collected from a service hatch or a “non-internal counter” such as a table at the doorway according to the Scottish Government’s stay at home laws.

Paul Pomroy, McDonald’s CEO UK and Ireland, said: “This week, a small number of restaurants will trial reopening walk-in takeaway with enhancements in place, with the plan to reopen the majority of restaurants for walk-in takeaway across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland from Monday, February 22.

“Due to government restrictions, we are unable to reopen takeaway in Scotland at this time.”

Scots can still get their fast food fix from McDonald’s through drive-thru and McDelivery services.

Click and serve will also be available for use through the My McDonald’s app at Scottish branches.
