Just in time for Veganuary, many fast-food chains and restaurants have been introducing new vegan items to their menus.
This included a vegan steak bake from Greggs, a zero chicken burger from KFC and the new Veggie Dippers from McDonald’s.
The vegan dippers are filled with red pepper rice, tomato pesto and split pea mix and coated in breadcrumbs.
And the dippers have now become a permanent item on the menu.
But fans have been left bitterly disappointed by the new addition, with some branding them ‘horrible’, reports Manchester Evening News .
Taking to Twitter, one customer said: "Greggs and KFC out here introducing proper vegan alternatives for 2020 whilst McDonalds have just taken the bread off of their much maligned smushed veg wrap and called it a new meal.”
Another added: "Catering for vegans in 2020. Greggs: VEGAN STEAK BAKE. Subway: VEGAN MEATBALLS. KFC: VEGAN CHICKEN BURGER. McDonalds: Well, our only vegetarian burger isn’t suitable for vegans because it has mayo, are you okay to just have the goujons on their own?"
A third said: "Do McDonalds know it’s really easy to get vegan meat replacements now & you don’t just have to mush up unseasoned vegetables and put them in breadcrumbs?"
"McDonalds in Finland have a vegan big Mac called 'The McVegan', and in Amsterdam they have vegan 'Chicken' legends. I've found generally in Europe McDonald's will have something vegan that isn't beanny. UK and Ireland are always the exception," another vegan said.
A McDonald's spokesperson told Manchester Evening News:“We are committed to understanding what our customers want from us and having seen a significant increase in orders of vegetarian options, we wanted to launch a vegan-certified product that could be a permanent menu addition.
"Our Veggie Dippers enabled us to do this quickly and effectively, and we are pleased with the positive feedback it has received.”
