McDonald's to re-open restaurants in May, according to reports

According to growing reports McDonald's is set to reopen UK and Ireland.

After initially only closing its doors to sit-in customers, the popular fast food chain was quickly then forced to shut its restaurants and drive-thrus during the Covid-19 lockdown.

On the last day of trading, March 23, huge queues formed outside restaurants up and down the country.

But now a re-opening date has been reported in the Farmer's Journal.

It is reported branches in the UK and Ireland will open in mid-May.

A reporter for the publication tweeted: "Breaking: the @farmersjournal understands McDonalds will reopen its restaurants in the UK and Ireland in mid-May."

The food chain previously decided to close amid the UK shutdown to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

In a statement last month, it said: “This is not a decision we are taking lightly, but one made with the well-being and safety of our employees in mind as well as in the best interests of our customers.

“We will work with local community groups to responsibly distribute food and drink from our restaurants in the coming days.”

We previously revealed one drive-thru restaurant, situated in Leicester, has been changed into a spot where people can be tested for the deadly bug.

The outlet, at Meridian Business Park, was handed over for use by DHU Healthcare to become the testing centre.

The fast food chain has outlined other ways it has supported the community through the pandemic.

The company has donated more than 300 tonnes of food and 100,000 litres of milk to key workers and vulnerable people through food banks, across 1,900 towns and cities in the UK.
