McDonald's takes Big Mac to new heights with Tibet restaurant - highest in the world

Fast food has been taken to new heights as McDonald's have opened a new restaurant in Tibet which is their highest in the world.

People in Lhasa, Tibet, can now tuck into a burger and fries at 12,139ft as long as they are not affected by altitude sickness as that is the same height as the tip of Grossglockner, Austria’s tallest mountain.

By comparison Ben Nevis, which is the UK’s tallest peak, is just 4,379ft high.

The McDonald's is in a shopping centre opposite the Potala Palace, a popular tourist attraction.

More than 60 people work at the restaurant in Lhasa, and does a roaring trade with queues often to collect orders, according to local media.

Tibet is the highest region in the world, with an average elevation of 14,000ft.

The restaurant comes with all the conveniences of McDonald’s at lower altitudes including self-service ordering and mobile payment.

Lhasa is the second biggest urban area in Tibet, and while China claims the region as being under its authority, it reportedly is developing a more liberal and economic society.

This includes being open internationally to foreign markets and brands like McDonalds

The city has been the religious and administrative capital of Tibet since the mid-17th century.

It contains many culturally significant Tibetan Buddhist sites such as the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Norbulingka Palaces.
