McDonald's shut down after dead mice and rodent droppings found in cupboards

A McDonald's was shut down after inspectors found it was overrun with mice.

Customers were kicked out when Environmental Health Officers discovered the rodents and droppings sprinkled around the fast-food chain in Leytonstone, East London.

One dead mouse was found in a storage cupboard after an inspection was ordered by Waltham Forest Council's food safety department when a customer complained about rodents.

Councillor Clyde Loakes, who oversees food hygiene in the borough, said: "Customers need to be able to dine in confidence and safety and we will not hesitate to act when businesses do not meet their responsibilities.

"Mice carry a range of diseases which can infect humans and cause real harm. I am glad that McDonald's has acknowledged their failings in this incident and are cooperating with Council officers."

McDonald's agreed to pay the council the full cost of £1,1821 for the formal closure action.

Thames Magistrates Court granted a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order against the fast-food branch on October 22.

It cannot reopen until the restaurant is rodent-free.

Mirror Online has contacted McDonald's for comment.

This is the first case of its kind in more than two decades at a McDonald's in the area.

Earlier this month, two giant rats were filmed allegedly scurrying over fresh pastries in a Sainsbury's supermarket.

Footage posted on social media yesterday shows the two rodents crawling over an uncovered butter croissant.

The appalling scene was captured on camera by filmmaker Anthony Mitson, who posted the video on his Instagram stories.

It is not clear which Sainsbury's store the incident happened at - and a spokesperson for the supermarket chain said they were investigating.

The clip quickly went viral online, with several people commenting and sharing it.

A viewer wrote: "This video is a perfect example of why supermarkets need to stop selling pastry out in the open like this. It's not just the rats it's the flies too."

Earlier this year, another rat was caught on camera dragging the heavy Big Mac burger box over a street in Tankersley, South Yorkshire.

The carton is almost the same size as the rodent, but it still manages to dodge oncoming traffic and squeeze between cars and lorries in the quest for the food inside.

The video has attracted a huge number of views on the social networking site TikTok.

The rat is seen with the burger box between its teeth and after it scurries across the busy road it faces a steep kerb which it overcomes and manages to drag what is left of the junk food to a grassy verge at the side of the road.
