McDonald's: Seven stats showing fast food giant's massive impact on UK economy

McDonald's has released figures showing the impact it has on the UK economy.

A report published in a landmark year for the fast food giant called 'McDonald's at 45' lays out what its chief executive Paul Pomroy sees as the key achievements, as well as what the firm wants to do next.

In the report, Mr Pomroy notes challenges facing McDonald's including climate change - which "remains this generation's greatest challenge", and that customers now expect "more information and variety in the food we choose without compromising on quality of value".

He said the document is part of the process helping the firm "continue having a positive impact", and face up to the challenges.

Here are seven key facts listed in the report showing just how important the fast food giant is to the UK economy:

1. There are 1,280 restaurants across the UK

2. Those restaurants serve 4 million customers each day - one in every 16 people

3. McDonald's estimates that in 2017, it contributed £3.36bn to the UK economy, meaning a total £54.5bn over the past 45 years

4. The firm employs 125,000 people, with a further 13,445 in the UK supply chain, including food and manufacturing sectors. Over 45 years, that number is 2.1m

5. Its direct spend with UK suppliers in 2017 was £1.44bn - the majority of which was in food and drink products

6. The fast food giant says the annual stimulus to the UK food industry directly attributable to McDonald's amounts to £983m each year

7. Each year, McDonald's invests £43m in training and development

Mr Pomroy said: “We are at our very best when the brand, our franchisees and our suppliers work together to deliver for our customers.

"With our unparalleled reach across the UK, we have a unique opportunity to create change and to make a real and lasting impact in the local areas that we serve.

"Our people are at the heart of these communities and, as a responsible and proud employer, we are committed to investing in them. The 125,000 colleagues working in our restaurants and offices are central to our past, present and future success and innovation.

"Today’s restaurants would be unrecognisable from 45 years ago. In the last five years, we have introduced table service, the My McDonald’s app and McDelivery. We have not stood still and we will continue to change for the better, guided by our customers, our people and our communities."
