McDonald's restaurants hit by temporary chicken shortage this week

McDonald's has been hit by a temporary chicken shortage and warns restaurants "may run out" this week.

The fast food chain said their Chicken Selects are "incredibly popular" which mean they may have to offer a reduced menu until its branches are restocked.

A spokesperson for McDonald's said: "Unfortunately we have a temporary shortage of Chicken Selects and our restaurants may run out this week. We are working incredibly hard to get this popular menu item back on sale in our restaurants. We know some customers will be disappointed to hear this news, and we would like to apologise for the short term inconvenience.”

It comes after the fast food firm was hit by supply shortages due to animal rights protesters blockading its distribution centres last month.

James Ozden, a spokesman for Animal Rebellion, said the action is aimed at calling out the animal agriculture industry for its part in the climate crisis.

He said: "The meat and dairy industry is destroying our planet: causing huge amounts of rainforest deforestation, emitting immense quantities of greenhouse gases and killing billions of animals each year.

"The only sustainable and realistic way to feed ten billion people is with a plant-based food system. Organic, free-range and 'sustainable' animal-based options simply aren't good enough."
