McDonald's restaurant in Stockport forced to close after coronavirus outbreak 'hits five staff members'

A McDonald's restaurant in Stockport has reportedly been forced to close after five of its staff members tested positive for coronavirus.

The branch on Welling Road South was closed as a "precautionary measure", the Manchester Evening News (MEN) has reported.

It comes as laws underpinning new lockdown restrictions for Greater Manchester, parts of east Lancashire and West Yorkshire are yet to be implemented four days after the rules were introduced, the Government has admitted.

A McDonald's spokesperson told MEN that the decision was taken "as a precautionary measure" following a rise of Covid-19 cases in the local area, along with five of their employees testing positive.

The spokesperson added: "As with all of the decisions we have made across this unprecedented period, the safety of our people and customers is our absolute priority, and we will re-open as soon as we feel we can."

Guidance published on Friday stated that it would be against the law for people from different households to meet in a private home or garden – unless they are part of a support bubble – and warned of £100 fines for those who flout the rules.

The new restrictions apply to Greater Manchester, including the City of Manchester, Trafford, Stockport, Oldham, Bury, Wigan, Bolton, Tameside, Rochdale and Salford.

However, the Department of Health and Social Care has yet to confirm that new laws have been implemented to bring the rules into force.

The department told the PA news agency on Monday afternoon that it was trying to make the changes legally enforceable as soon as possible but insisted the rules still applied from July 31.
