McDonald's reportedly set to reopen six Dublin stores from next week - but there's a catch

McDonald's is reportedly set to reopen six of its Dublin stores for drive through and delivery services from next week.

After weeks of remaining shut following the announcement of coronavirus restrictions, the fast food chain may be set to open a small number of its locations with limited access.

In an email sent to employees, which was seen by Dublin Live, staff at the fast food chain were told to be prepared for the reopening of some of its stores from May 13 onwards.

The email states: "Please see attached message from Paul Pomroy regarding the reopening of stores going forward.

"Please note that there will be six DT (drive through) stores opening on the 13th in Dublin for delivery only also.

"We anticipate opening DT only towards the end of May. I look forward to seeing you all back at work then."

McDonald's have been contacted for a statement on this matter.

The fast food chain closed all its restaurants across the UK and Ireland in March amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking last week about the prospect of reopening in Ireland, McDonald’s CEO Paul Pomroy said: “In March, we took the decision to temporarily close our restaurants in the UK and Ireland for the safety of our people and customers. Recently, we began working through a potential and limited reopening.

"We have been listening to our employees and customers as well as engaging with government and trade bodies in the UK and Ireland to help ensure we do this responsibly, when the time is right.

"Restarting our business is not an easy task even when reopening in a limited capacity."

He added: "We have set ourselves some key criteria for reopening, all of which take time – first and foremost ensuring the wellbeing of our people and creating the right environment for them to return to work; secondly ensuring we have enough supply of fresh produce; and finally working in-step with government guidelines to ensure the safety of our customers.

“This week we are carrying out some operational tests to explore what our reopening might look like; the UK restaurant where these tests will take place will remain closed to the public.

"These tests will include exploring social distancing measures for our crew, PPE options and opening in a limited capacity.

"For now we remain closed, and will only reopen when we are absolutely confident we can have the right measures in place to ensure everyone’s wellbeing.”
