McDonald's reopens first walk-in service today with some key changes

McDonald's has been busy reopening hundreds of drive-thrus and restaurants for McDelivery after closing in March due to the coronavirus crisis.

Today, however, marks McDonald's reopening restaurants for walk-in service again.

The move will allow customers to walk into branches themselves and collect food, reports The Mirror.

McDonald’s UK chief executive, Paul Pomroy, said: "Following a closed test in London last month, I am pleased to confirm that we will begin reopening for takeaway and click and collect.

"Starting on Wednesday 17 June, in 11 Roadchef service station locations, we will welcome motorway users back inside our restaurants for the first time since March.

"We’re taking our time to get this right, reviewing our processes before we gradually roll-out to high streets, towns and city centres from 24 June onwards."

To keep customers and employees safe, restaurants will look a little different to what people are used to.

McDonald's is implementing eight key changes to help keep everyone safe

  • Clear signposting and floor-markings to create a one-way system around restaurants for customers and delivery partner couriers
  • Limiting numbers in restaurants in line with social distancing – this will vary depending upon the restaurant size and lay-out
  • Customers asked in only when space becomes available
  • Customers will be asked to sanitise their hands at a cleaning station
  • Fewer self-order screens switched on - which will be sanitised "at least every 30 minutes". Customers can also order via the My McDonald’s app
  • Children are still welcome, McDonald's is putting away its crayons and colouring sheets and keeping play areas and digital play areas closed
  • Seating areas, customer toilets and lifts will remain closed
  • Recycling points will also remain closed

These changes come in an addition to the changes already put in place in drive thru and McDelivery restaurants.

Including Perspex screens in kitchens, service areas and windows, additional protective equipment for teams, a reduced menu and contactless payment with a £25 spending cap where possible.
