McDonald's plays classical music in Scots restaurants and here's the real reason why

Have you ever wondered why you often hear Mozart and Bach blasting out of the speakers while you eat a Big Mac?

McDonald's restaurants across Scotland have been known to ditch pop tunes in favour of classical music while diners tuck into their food.

The fast food chain has been using this subtle tactic for more than five years - but some customers are still puzzled as to the real reason for the orchestral music.

Classical music is often blared from the speakers to tackle unruly and rowdy behaviour in restaurants, especially at night.

Bosses have drafted in Beethoven, Bach and Handel to try to reduce violence as it “encourages calm behaviour”.

A mixture of compositions is often used, ranging from full orchestral to solo piano pieces and even opera.

In 2015, Scotland's busiest McDonald’s restaurant started piping in classical music to calm customers down after police were called to 200 incidents in 14 months.

McDonald’s in Kilmarnock ditched upbeat music this year in favour of tunes from composers in the evening to stop youngsters congregating.

Scores of youths were known to hang out at the town centre fast food joint late into the night, with staff forced to ask them to leave when they become too boisterous or rowdy.

In fact, McDonald's says reports of crime fell at one London branch in 2018 thanks to soothing music, Sky News reports.

Police were called to the fast food branch in Shepherd's Bush 71 times in 2017 to reports of bodily harm incidents, knife possession and suspected drug deals in the toilets.

Cops were called just twice after the location starting blasting the likes of Sergei Rachmaninoff, Beethoven and Mozart.

A McDonald’s spokesman said: “We play a range of music at different times of the day to create an atmosphere that is welcoming for our customers.

“Classical music is part of our playlist and is used in a number of our restaurants across the UK and Ireland.

“We’ve found it can create a soothing environment and encourages people to relax.”
