A McDonald’s plastic straw has been listed on eBay for £899 after a backlash against new paper alternatives.
Described as “super rare”, the item was listed on Thursday as the seller criticised “the snowflake generation”.
McDonald’s is ditching plastic straws from its 1,361 UK restaurants amid pressure from environmentalists to be more eco-friendly.
With the fast food giant transitioning to paper straws, the bizarre eBay listing by “the_wrap_man” read: “Brilliant uncirculated brand new McDonald’s straw this is soon to become the stuff of legend, imagine your [sic] about 50 years older than you are now, telling your grandchildren how you got given plastic straws from McDonald’s and they will look up to you like god!
“And you will turn to them and laugh and say I’m no god, I was alive before the snowflake generation took over!”
The listing included a link to a petition which is calling for McDonald’s to bring back plastic straws, after scores of customers said the paper alternatives were inadequate.
The petition had reached 38,000 signatures as of noon on Thursday.
McDonald’s has defended the new straws, saying it has “introduced these to reduce our plastic waste from our restaurants, and to do our bit for the environment”.
