McDonald's plans not ready for public consumption

May 11--McDonald's told U.S. restaurant operators about more of its turnaround plans Monday but the public will have to wait and see what changes are in store.

The company was expected to provide updates on a variety of efforts, including menu changes, during a webcast with its U.S. operators. McDonald's, based in Oak Brook, declined to share details and plans on Monday afternoon.

The internal webcast comes a week after McDonald's publicly unveiled the initial steps in its global turnaround plan. The global effort includes reorganizing its operating segments, selling some of the locations it runs on its own to franchisees, and giving billions back to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.

During the May 4 announcements, CEO Steve Easterbrook mentioned some recent U.S. menu efforts including new artisan grilled chicken and one-third pound sirloin burgers. He also said there would be an emphasis on value to come this summer.

In April, sales at U.S. locations open 13 months or longer fell 2.3 percent, as visits declined.

In the United States, McDonald's says it has been simplifying the menu, while at the same time it is testing projects such as serving certain breakfast items all day. Also, some restaurants are featuring products such as mozzarella sticks and muffins, which are not typically on the menu.
