Bees are an essential part of our eco-system, due to the fact they perform the majority of the earth’s pollination which supplies 90 per cent of the planet’s nutrition – but they are facing steady decline.
To highlight this, and to celebrate World Bee Day, McDonald’s has created the ‘world’s smallest restaurant’ which it's dubbed the 'McHive'.
The small-scale restaurant replica is complete with seating, a drive-through and signage – but it’s also a fully-functioning beehive.
The beehives will sit on top of McDonald’s stores, starting with the restaurants in Sweden which already has five restaurants with beehives on top of them.
Christoffer Rönnblad, marketing director of McDonald’s Sweden, said in a statement: “We have a lot of really devoted franchisees who contribute to our sustainability work, and it feels good that we can use our size to amplify such a great idea as beehives on the rooftops.”
While McDonald’s hasn't expanded its bee-saving efforts to the UK yet, with nearly 38,000 restaurants around the world which could be the home for potential beehives, it’s a step in the right direction.
