McDonald's new McPick 2 promotion costs more, now $5 from $2

Feb. 24--McDonald's is altering its McPick 2 promotion to add some of its more expensive menu items, drawing ire on social media.

The world's largest burger chain said it will, for the first time, put the Big Mac, 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, Filet-O-Fish and Quarter Pounder with Cheese on a national value menu, offering two choices for $5. That deal will be available nationwide starting Monday but is already available in some restaurants.

The 2-month-old McPick 2 promotion began as a 2-for-$2 deal, which is leading some to take to Twitter to complain about the higher price. When the company started the deal in January, it said it would be temporary and that it expected to change the components. The 2-for-$2 deal offers the choice of a double cheeseburger, a small fry, a McChicken or mozzarella sticks.

The Oak Brook company has been making strides to focus on its premium offerings in other countries and is even adding table service in the U.K. But the McPick 2 change might backfire, considering its rivals are still heavily focused on value promotions. Wendy's has a 4-for-$4 deal, and Burger King has a 5-for-$4 promotion.

The new McPick 2 menu will also be available for a limited time, and McDonald's didn't say how long it would last.
