McDonald's makes immediate change to way customers can buy food at every UK restaurant in lockdown

McDonald’s has confirmed a major change to its UK restaurants as a third national lockdown begins.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced new lockdown measures this week as coronavirus cases continue to rise across the country.

Lockdown has meant the closure of all non-essential retailers , including clothing and homeware stores, vehicle showrooms, betting shops, tailors, tobacco and vape shops, electronic goods and mobile phone stores, auction houses and market stalls selling non-essential goods.

Other businesses such as restaurants, bars, gyms , cinemas, swimming pools, bingo halls, indoor play, bowling alleys and more have also been ordered to close.

In light on the announcement, McDonald’s has confirmed a major change to its restaurants, which will close their doors from today, January 6.

This means McDonald’s fans won’t be able to visit restaurants to dine-in or takeaway, but instead must rely on drive-thru or delivery services.

Paul Pomroy, McDonald’s CEO UK and Ireland, said: “Following the latest government announcements, our restaurants will remain open for Drive-Thru and McDelivery services and Click & Serve for Drive-Thru which is available via the My McDonald’s App.

“Our dine-in and walk-in takeaway services will be temporarily unavailable while we take time to review and reassess our safety procedures with an independent health and safety body.

“This is a temporary change in our operations to allow us to test and validate any additional measures that may further enhance the safety of our takeaway service.

“We will continue to keep customers updated via the My McDonald’s App and our website.”
