McDonald's makes big change to Happy Meals and it's amazing news for parents

Ahead of World Book Day, McDonald's is adding a book token to its Happy Meals.

That means alongside your toy, drink, side and main, you'll also be able to pick up a free book for your £2.99.

Children and families can swap the token for one of the 12 World Book Day books, or use it to get £1 off another book instead, at locations across the UK - including many supermarkets.

World Book Day chief executive Cassie Chadderton said: “We are thrilled to announce that World Book Day is working with McDonald’s to encourage even more families to share stories together."

McDonald’s chief marketing officer Gareth Helm said: “We hope the distribution of World Book Day tokens on our Happy Meal boxes will encourage even more families to Share a Story and celebrate the magic of reading together.”

This year's £1 books are designed to be enjoyed by kids of all ages - with authors including Anthony Horowitz, Matt Haig, Onjali Q. Raúf, Greg James & Chris Smith and Beth Reekles.

The tokens will be available on Happy Meal boxes from Wednesday 5 February to Tuesday 17 March, you'll be able yo use them between 27 February and 29 March.

Chadderton said: “This partnership will help World Book Day to encourage all children to discover the joy of books and reading for pleasure.”

McDonald’s has already distributed 90 million free books since 2013 as part of its Happy Readers campaign - making it the largest provider of free books to children in the UK.

Helm said: “We are incredibly proud of our Happy Readers scheme, with over 90 million books given away to families across the UK and Ireland since 2013.

"Our partnership with World Book Day is yet another way in which we are making it easier for families to enjoy reading together."
