McDonald's launches vegan option - but it's no burger

McDonald's has revealed a new vegan meal will be available soon - but it's not a burger or Gregg-style meat-free take on one of their classics.

While Greggs hit the headlines for making a vegan version of their sausage roll , Maccies is not releasing a meat-free Big Mac or burger - although it could be argued that the new product is a twist on the chicken nugget.

McDonald's, which has branches across Newcastle and the North East, will release "Veggie Dippers" in the New Year, which will be available in Happy Meals and adult Extra Value meals. The meal consists of a drink, vegetarian-friendly fries and veggie dippers. McDonald's website states its fries are suitable for vegans, while the dippers have been approved by the Vegan Society.

The dippers are made with red pepper, rice, sun-dried tomato pesto and splt peas, coated in breadcrumbs.

The Veggie Dippers will be available for £3.29 separately, or £4.99 as part of an Extra Value meals, or as a smaller kid's portion in the restaurant chain's Happy Meals, for £2.99. The new product launches on January 2, 2020.

Thomas O’Neill, head of food marketing at McDonald’s UK & Ireland, said: "The Veggie Dippers are a delicious addition to our menu and we're looking forward to seeing what customers make of our first vegan Extra Value Meal and Happy Meal in the new year."

McDonald's saw an 80% boost in sales for vegetarian wraps and salads last year. The wraps can be made vegan by ordering them without mayonaise.
