McDonald’s launches first Happy Meals collaboration with Netflix: See the toys

McDonald’s and Netflix are launching their first line of Happy Meal toys together with a special tribute to the streaming service’s new series, Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85.

The Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 Happy Meal is inspired by Eric Robles’s animated show, a spinoff of the supernatural drama Stranger Things, which concluded in December.

According to a Friday press release, the new McDonald's meal includes one of 12 collectable character toys — with two new personalities revealed weekly — a Stranger Things activity book and a QR code that unlocks an interactive game, where players help save Hawkins, the fictional Midwestern town in the Netflix series.

For their meal, customers can choose between a four-piece or six-piece Chicken McNuggets or a burger, along with fries, a drink and apple slices.

The new boxes will be available in McDonald’s restaurants in the U.S. starting May 5. The Happy Meals will then launch in different countries worldwide, including Brazil, Singapore, Norway, Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, Italy and India.

Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, released April 23 on Netflix, is set in the months-long narrative void between the end of Stranger Things’s second season and the start of its third. The original series’ main characters return, with Eleven, Dustin, Mike, Lucas and Max attempting to solve a terrifying mystery in order to save Hawkins. However, the animated cast is not voiced by the same actors in Stranger Things.

Aside from the Stranger Things-themed meal, Netflix recently worked with McDonald’s to launch a KPop Demon Hunters-inspired menu. The menu options, which launched March 31, include two limited-edition adult combo meals — one for HUNTR/X and one for the Saja Boys, the two rival KPop groups in Netflix’s hit animated movie.

The Saja Boys Breakfast Meal, only available during breakfast hours, consists of a Sausage McMuffin with Egg topped with a peppery Spicy Saja Sauce, alongside Hash Browns and a small “soda pop.”

Fans who order the rival HUNTR/X meal for lunch or dinner receive a 10-piece order of Chicken McNuggets, a medium soft drink and Ramyeon McShaker Fries — which have a soy, garlic, sesame and spice seasoning inspired by the ramen that the KPop girl group enjoys in the movie. To enjoy the side, customers sprinkle the umami seasoning into a McShaker bag, add the fries and shake it to distribute.

The menu also includes the Derpy McFlurry, which McDonald’s says “blends creamy vanilla soft serve with berry popping pearls, enrobed in a wild berry sauce.”
