McDonald's launch new Crispy McFillet - we tried it and it's fancier than other burgers

If you love a chicken burger and have been hoping McDonald's will create something new, then you're in luck as the fast-food giants have announced a brand new item.

The company is trialling a Crispy McFillet burger which features a crispy coated chicken breast fillet, shredded iceberg lettuce and black pepper mayo in an Insta-worthy sourdough-style sesame bun.

And as well as being aesthetically pleasing, the Crispy McFillet is bound to tantalise the taste buds too as the mayo features a hint of truffle.

Only a lucky few will be able to get their hands on the new item right away though as McDonald's will be sales testing it for a limited time in 41 restaurants across the Midlands and nine in Ireland from Wednesday, March 30.

They're hoping that if the burger is a success they'll be able to roll it out across the UK later this year - so keep your eyes peeled for future announcements.

For now, customers in those selected areas will be able to pick up the Crispy McFillet for £4.19 or £5.59 for an extra value meal (includes fries and drink).

Ahead of the launch, The Mirror was invited down to try the Crispy McFillet and it's safe to say we were pretty impressed.

This is definitely a step up from your average McDonald's fare - with a nicer looking bun, a generous amount of chicken compared to the thin patties you often find in beef burgers and the boujee mayo with truffle in it.

Once you know about the truffle, it instantly gives the McFillet a fancier feel as it's just not an ingredient you'd ever expect to find at McDonald's.

I was a little sceptical about whether it would work, but I can confirm the unique addition was a great idea - and even if truffle isn't your thing, you'll likely still enjoy this burger.

Jonny Wood, the Food Development Manager at McDonald's HQ assured me that they'd only added a small amount of truffle to the mayo so as not to scare any customers away from trying the new product.

Essentially, if you weren't told the truffle was there, you'd be able to tell something about the burger was different but you might not be able to put your finger on exactly what, which is kind of fun.

Aside from the mayo, our other notes on the Crispy McFillet revolved around the chicken itself - which we thought was very similar to a large chicken select.

It's got a little kick to it, which Jonny explains comes from the black pepper and cayenne used in the marinade.

Initially, I was disappointed to see there was no cheese inside the burger, as this is often the best part in my opinion, but after polishing off the whole thing I realised they had made the right choice to exclude it as it really didn't need it. There was so much mayo the taste would have been lost.

So our verdict is in - the Crispy McFillet is fancier than your average McDonald's burger and definitely worth a try if you can get one.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Michelle Graham-Clare, Chief Marketing Officer at McDonald’s UK&I said: "We know how much our customers love our iconic chicken menu items, so we’ve taken our time to get the Crispy McFillet packed with flavour, to really satisfy our customers.

"We really believe this newest addition to our menu is the tastiest chicken burger in the UK and Ireland and we cannot wait to hear what our customers in the Midlands think of it."
