McDonald's is making a change to how customers order its Happy Meals

McDonald's has announced big changes which will affect how its customer order Happy Meals in future.

The changes come after the fast food giant scrapped its plastic straws in a bid to reduce its plastic waste.

Going forward, staff at its restaurants will soon be giving diners the option as to whether or not they want a toy to come with their meals.

Trials will be taking place which will allow customers to opt to chose a fruit bag instead of a toy.

The move comes after rival fast food chain Burger King axed plastic toys from kids' meals - and will offer free meals to people who return unwanted toys, reports BirminghamLive.

Paul Pomroy, CEO of McDonald's UK and Ireland, said: "We recognise that some people may not want a plastic Happy Meal toy, but we also know that the gifts provide fun for many families and children.

"That's why we'll be running these trials, in order to give our customers a choice; they also can choose not to have a toy or gift at all.

"It's important we understand what our customers want and we'll learn a lot from whether they choose a fruit bag or a book over a toy."

Other ways McDonald's has reduced its plastic usage is by scrapping McFlurry lids and getting rid of single-use plastic in its salad packaging.
