McDonald's in Austria gives away free beer with meals to Euro 2016 fans

McDonald’s restaurants in Austria are handing out free six packs of beers to fans watching the 2016 European Championships

The restaurant chain announced it would be giving the drinks to any customers ordering food deliveries of €20 (£15) or more to enjoy throughout the tournament.

It says it wants to “bring a stadium-style atmosphere” to Austrian homes with the promotion, in partnership with the Vienna-based Ottakringer Brewery.

The fast-food chain confirmed the move was partly in sympathy with those “who cannot be in France right now” to watch their team's matches.

Germany, France, Greece, Portugal, South Korea and Austria are currently the only countries where beer is served on tap in McDonald’s restaurants.

According to McDonald’s website, the chain does not serve beer in its UK branches as they claim there is “no customer demand” for it, and it does not fit in with the “family-friendly focus” of their restaurants.

Meanwhile, the hotly tipped Austrian national team currently sit at the bottom of Group F at the Championships, having lost their opening fixture 2-0 to local rivals Hungary in Bordeaux on Tuesday evening.
