McDonald's hires former Kraft executive

Sept. 24--A former Kraft Foods Group executive will lead McDonald's in innovation and strategy, McDonald's announced Thursday, part of the company's ongoing efforts to reinvigorate the business after a long period of declining sales.

Chris Kempczinski, 46, will begin his new job as corporate executive vice president of strategy, business development and innovation on Oct. 26, McDonald's announced.

"At this crucial time in our business, Chris brings an unparalleled level of strategic expertise coupled with a fresh perspective to our management team," CEO Steve Easterbrook said in a statement. "Chris is a proven global leader with a solid track record of success and will play an instrumental role moving our brand forward."

Before the merger of Kraft Foods Group and H.J. Heinz earlier this year, Kempczinski was executive vice president of growth initiatives and president of international, said Kraft Heinz spokesman Michael Mullen.

After the merger closed in July, he remained with the combined company for "a transition period to assist with the integration of the company's combined Canadian businesses and support the roll-out of Kraft brands outside North America," Mullen said in a statement.

"We thank Chris for his service to Kraft Heinz and wish him the best in his future endeavors," Mullen said.

McDonald's also announced that David Fairhurst, 47, would be promoted to the expanded position of corporate executive vice president, chief people officer. Fairhurst, who starts Oct. 1, replaces Rich Floersch, executive vice president and chief human resources officer, who will retire effective Dec. 31.

McDonald's also announced Thursday the hire of Jano Cabrera, 41, as corporate senior vice president of U.S. communications, global media and public relations, effective Oct. 15.

Previously, Cabrera worked as worldwide vice president at the Chicago-based public relations firm Burson-Marsteller.
