McDonald's fan fined by police after driving 100 miles to get a burger

A woman was fined by police after she went on 100-mile trip across three counties to get a meal from McDonald's.

North Yorkshire Police issued a fixed penalty notice to the motorist on Saturday after she was caught driving from Lincolnshire to Scarborough.

The woman, who is in her 30s, said she was getting a McDonald’s with her sister.

In a post on Facebook, the force said: “Loads of us love a Big Mac and fries, but most of us wouldn't dream of driving 100 miles during lockdown to get one.

"On Saturday, one woman decided to visit Scarborough from Lincolnshire for a McDonald's meal.

"Driving through three counties to get a burger is not classed as essential travel. And it's unlikely she was 'lovin' it' when she received a fixed penalty notice from North Yorkshire Police.

"Most people in North Yorkshire are trying really hard to stop the spread of Covid in our communities and protect the most vulnerable.

"When this pandemic is over, it'll be fantastic to be able to go where we want, when we want.

"But in the meantime, thank you to everyone who continues to #StayHomeStayLocalStaySafe”

On Tuesday, a senior police chief said almost 45,000 fines have been issued to people across the UK for breaching Covid-19 laws.

National Police Chiefs’ Council chairman (NPCC) Martin Hewitt also warned that officers will not “waste time” trying to reason with people who have “no regard” for the safety of others.
