McDonald's Edinburgh: 'please don't walk through our drive-thrus'

McDonald’s has confirmed who is and isn’t allowed to use its drive-thru services after a number of Scots branches reopened this week - leading to monumental queues and people trying to walk through the restaurants' drive-thru.

Hungry fast-food fans have been racing to get their burger fix since some restaurants opened for the first time since late March.

80 Scots branches are now selling the likes of Big Macs and McChicken Sandwiches amid the coronavirus lockdown - and people can't seem to get enough of the good news.

However, traffic cops have been called into some restaurants after large queues formed during the first days of reopening.

At one store in Newbridge near Kirkliston yesterday, staff said over 120 people had been through in the first hour since opening.

But there have been reports of people doing all they can to get their hands on one of the firm’s world-famous burgers again.

Teesside Live reported on one crafty customer who created his own cardboard car and ‘drove’ it to the drive-thru.

Despite his creativeness, he was left burgerless after a 30 minute wait.

McDonald’s has now clarified who is allowed to use their drive-thru facilities - and it is bad news for us who prefer to visit on foot or by bike.

A spokesperson for the fast food giant said: “It’s great that our customers are so excited to get back to using our drive-thrus, and we are aware there have been some very creative attempts to access our lanes.

“However, for everyone’s safety, we absolutely cannot serve people who are not in road-going motor vehicles, and we would ask customers to refrain from attempting to use the drive-thru lane in any other manner."

McDonald’s has set up a raft of safety measures to ensure that staff and customers are safeguarded during the COVID-19 pandemic.

These include perspex screens, face coverings and gloves.

Drive-thru customers will be allowed to spend a maximum of £25 per vehicle and are encouraged to pay using contactless methods.
