McDonald's drive-thrus to reopen across UK by 'early June' after being given green light

It's good news for fast food fans as McDonald's announced it will reopen all of its drive-throughs across the UK by "early June".

The move comes after the UK Government's environment secretary George Eustice gave the chain the "green light", adding that its drive-throughs were "made" for social distancing.

McDonald's said that, in addition to 15 restaurants opening down south from tomorrow, a further 30 pilot branches will reopen next week offering meals through the drive-through lane, from Wednesday 20 May.

While it has not yet been revealed where these branches will be, the fast food giant plans to reopen all its UK drive-throughs by early June and say customers can use the "restaurant locater" to discover which restaurants are open for business over the coming weeks.

As McDonald's restaurants begin to reopen, customers are being made aware of a raft of new rules and measures that will be put in place to help prevent the spread of the deadly virus.

This includes a capped spend on drive-throughs of £25, fewer people in the kitchen and service areas and a reduced menu over reduced hours, there will also be perspex screens in place at key locations.

Meanwhile, staff will have their temperatures checked when they arrive at work, they will also be given protective equipment and additional training on cleanliness practices, including increased frequency of hand washing and extra sanitising of touch points around the restaurant.

Paul Pomroy, McDonald’s CEO UK and Ireland, said: "Eight weeks ago, we took the decision to close our entire restaurant estate, an unprecedented decision taken in the best interests of our employees and customers.

"Over the last two months we have worked tirelessly to overhaul our operational procedures to enable our teams to return to work safely and I am pleased to write to you the day before we begin testing our return to the UK and Ireland."
