McDonald's customers get their hopes up after reports claimed restaurants to reopen in May

McDonald's has taken to social media afterreports which suggested its restaurants could reopen mid-May.

The fast-food chain closed its restaurants across the UK on March 23, when the Government put in place new lockdown measures to slow the spread of the covid-19 virus.

A number of media outlets suggested a reopening of limited capacity in May, after the Irish Farmer's Journal was first to break the news on Friday, April 24.

But replying to numerous customers on social media, McDonald's said: "We have no plans to reopen at this stage and our restaurants and drive thru will remain closed.

"When we do have plans to reopen, we’ll be making announcements via our social media channels and our website."

A McDonald's spokesman told Nottinghamshire Live: "We are not issuing any statement on the rumours around our reopening. When we have finalised our plans, we’ll be sure to let you know the details."

A McDonald's drive thru in the East Midlands will also become a coronavirus testing facility.

The fast-food chain confirmed it would be using its restaurant in Meridian Business Park, Leicester, to offer testing for key workers and NHS staff.

Speaking about the unprecedented closures on March 23 Jerry Nicholls, who owns nine restaurants across Nottingham, previously said: "I don’t want to see people in busy restaurants for the first time ever. I don’t want to see people shoulder to shoulder."
