McDonald's clears up confusion after face covering rules leave customers baffled

Do you have to wear a mask while eating inside McDonald's?

Trying to ingest a Big Mac through a layer of cotton or guiding a chip under an elasticated face covering poses obvious practical difficulties.

Confusion arises over a grey area in the new Government rules regarding places where you can both dine in or get a takeaway.

Since Friday, it is against the law to enter certain premises without a face covering and £100 fines can be handed out for non-compliance.

In some instances, it's pretty straight forward - for example, supermarkets, shopping centres and clothes stores.

Earlier this week the Government confirmed it would also apply to takeaway food chains, after some confusion over whether they'd be included.

However, the rules do not apply to restaurants and pubs, for obvious reasons.

So where does McDonald's stand? In short, if you're standing up in a branch of the fast food restaurant, you need your mask on.

A McDonald's spokesperson told The Sun : "In line with Government guidance in England takeaway customers are required to wear a face covering at all times while in our restaurants.

"Also in line with the guidance, dine-in customers can go directly to a table and order using the My McDonald’s App without a face covering, but should wear one if moving around the restaurant - for example using the self-order screens, ordering at the counter or if using the toilets."

The same rule applies to similar businesses which offer both dine-in and takeaway options.

Face coverings don't need to be worn while eating or drinking and using table service - but do if you're queuing up to get something to go or moving around the restaurant for some other reason.
