McDonald's bringing in new rules as more drive thrus reopen today

As McDonald’s reopens another 30 restaurants across the UK today, the chain is bringing in new rules.

The fast food giant confirmed last week that the next 30 restaurants would be drive-thru only , and that customers would notice several changes.

One of the new rules means that each car ordering at the drive-thru will be limited to spending £25 and customers are encouraged to pay via contactless.

Now that the drive-thrus are open, McDonald’s fans will only be allowed to order up to a limit of £25 per car.

Customers will also notice that service may be slower than usual, as staff will be working in smaller teams and adhering to strict social distancing measures.

McDonald’s expects queues at its busier sites and asks that customers “continue to be supportive of and patient with our restaurant teams as we slowly and safely return”.

Paul Pomroy, McDonald’s CEO UK and Ireland confirmed that the chain has hopes of reopening all drive-thrus by early June.

He said: “There has been an incredible response to news of our reopening and we know many of you are eager for us to extend our reopening plans at a faster pace.

“Moving in step with government guidelines, we plan to reopen all our Drive-Thrus by early June. We will keep the restaurant locator on our website updated as our Drive Thrus reopen over the coming weeks.”

McDonald’s is also adding new safety and wellbeing measures for when restaurants reopen including perspex screens and floor markings in specific areas to aid social distancing, additional protective equipment for staff, social distancing measures for all delivery staff and service partners.

All staff will also have their temperature taken on arrival for their shift.

On when more restaurants could reopen, Pomroy added: “As we get accustomed to the new processes and procedures, we will look to reopen more restaurants, for longer hours and reintroduce more menu items.

“But only when I am confident we can do so whilst maintaining the new procedures we have introduced for the protection of our people."
