McDonald's has been slammed by furious customers over its lack of vegetarian options on the menu.
The fast food giant is operating a reduced menu during the pandemic after restaurants reopened following months of lockdown.
However, customers are outraged at the choice of meat-free items available, with vegetarians left with only 'mozzarella dippers, fries or a fruit bag.'
Many customers claim that staff have told them there has been a "national shortage" when they ask for the Veggie Dippers, The Mirror reports.
But it turns out the vegetarian - and vegan - dippers have been removed from sale, according to a tweet by the fast-food company.
In reply to a customer's query about the item being "recalled" it said: "Hi, we have recently removed the Veggie Dippers from sale. We will return these products to the menu as soon as we can."
Many vegetarian customers were quick to share their frustrations online.
One commented: " @McDonalds Why have you discontinued all vegan/vegetarian mains in Scotland this week? Very disappointing given all of your rival companies have multiple. And given how you raved about those dipper things. Joke’s on you, you missed £12 from us alone today."
Another added: "Why the f*** has McDonald’s removed all their veggie stuff I am gonna cry."
A third wrote: "WHY THE HELL HAVE YOU RECALLED THE 1 VEGGIE OPTION ON YOUR MENU?!????!!!!"
A fourth said: "Lol so McDonald’s have seriously recalled all their veggie pieces... meaning that if you’re a vegetarian going into maccies, your only options are the mozzarella dippers, fries or a fruit bag. Cba what a joke".
And another commented: "Today I was sitting at @McDonaldsUK Harrow.
"Me and my vegetarian kid ate only chips, because #mcdonalds running out veg so there is no any veg items left to sell."
She added: "Being pregnant, I wanted to eat here but now I have to go to another restaurant."
A McDonald's spokesperson told The Mirror: "Due to an issue resulting in some of our Veggie Dippers having not met the high standards that we expect from our products, we have temporarily removed them from our menu.
"We are working hard to return our Dippers to the menu as quickly as possible, and apologise to our customers for any disappointment caused.”
