Schoolgirl basher in court over carjacking which left taxi driver with suspected eye socket fracture

One of three teenagers accused of violently carjacking a taxi over the weekend was on bail at the time awaiting sentencing for bashing a schoolgirl at an Adelaide fast food outlet four months ago.

The 15-year-old girl — who cannot be named for legal reasons — appeared in the Adelaide Youth Court today charged with aggravated robbery and breaching bail.

She did not make an application for bail, and her case was adjourned until June.

In February, she pleaded guilty to assaulting a 13-year-old schoolgirl at a McDonald's outlet — an incident which was filmed and posted on social media.

One of her co-accused for the alleged taxi robbery — a 17-year-old girl — applied for bail today, but Magistrate David White ordered a report to see if she was suitable for home detention.

The trio also includes a 15-year-old boy, all of whom were charged with aggravated robbery.

Prosecutor Rebecca Andersen told the court the teenagers ordered the taxi from Evanston Gardens early on Saturday morning before asking the driver to pull over in Gawler South.

"At this time, $15 has shown up on the meter. The male accused was seated in the front passenger seat. He paid $20," she said.

"As the victim was gathering change, [the boy] has struck the victim in the head with an empty whisky bottle.

"He stated it felt like a clenched fist punch.

"One of the passengers then opened the driver's door and forcibly removed the victim from the taxi by pulling him out."

Ms Andersen said the trio then drove off in the taxi, which was found abandoned at a disused orchard at Berri in the Riverland — about 200 kilometres from where it was allegedly stolen.

She said the police dog squad was deployed and found the teenagers nearby before they were arrested.

"CCTV from the taxi shows each person's involvement," she said.

She said the victim, named Jaspreet, was taken to the Lyell McEwin Hospital suffering cuts to his face, as well as an unconfirmed fractured eye socket.

The court was told the girl was given a suspended sentence weeks earlier for stealing a vehicle and dangerous driving to cause a police pursuit.

But the 17-year-old's lawyer told Magistrate White that she suffered from complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

"The offending is objectively very serious," her lawyer said.

Neither she nor the 15-year-old boy applied for bail, and all three co-accused will reappear in court later this month.
