McDonald's announces plans for walk-in takeaway from next week – and the return of the McBreakfast

McDonald's has announced that it will begin offering in-store takeaway from next week, beginning with a pilot scheme at service stations.

Following the opening of more than 1000 restaurants offering takeaway and in some cases drive-thru, the fast food giant is planning to offer takeaways from Wednesday June 17.

Initially, the chain will test the scheme at 11 roadside restaurants, before rolling it out gradually to high streets across the United Kingdom and Ireland. Delivery can be done through the McDonald's app, Uber Eats or Just Eat, or instore using the self-order screens, which the group say will be sanitised every 30 minutes.

The group has yet to name the restaurants which will reopen, saying it would confirm details "nearer the time".

Speaking of the new plans, McDonald’s UK and Ireland CEO Paul Pomroy said: "Over the last four weeks, we have carefully reopened over 1,000 restaurants for Drive-thru or McDelivery, only progressing to new channels and more restaurants when we were confident that we could provide a safe working environment for our people.

"We’re delighted to be back. I am extremely proud of our employees, franchisees and suppliers who are working so hard in so many communities already.

"I know that opening those doors will be incredibly satisfying for our restaurant teams, but it will also mean them getting used to the measures we have implemented to enable us to safely return. So please continue to support them and follow the social distancing measures we’ve introduced for the safety of our teams and you."

McDonald's social-distancing measures for sites offering takeaway will include the use of a one-way system, a limit on the number of customers allowed in store at one time and the closure of all dining spaces and toilets.

The group also announced the return of the McDonald's breakfast, including the McMuffin. A small group of yet to be confirmed restaurants will offer a breakfast service from June 24, with a plan to roll out the menu for delivery, drive-thru and takeaway in July.
