McDonald's adds two vegetarian options to temporary 'lockdown' menu after backlash

McDonald's has added two vegetarian options to its 'limited' lockdown menu after backlash from customers.

In line with government guidelines, the chain has now opened 14 stores in Ireland, with dozens more set to return by the end of the week.

Due to social distancing, the restaurant franchise can only make certain dishes and has created a limited lockdown menu from customers.

But the chain soon received backlash online when no vegetarian options were included on the list.

McDonald's has now said that although the menu was devised before operational tests, it found that the Veggie Dippers and the Vegetable Deluxe could be prepared safely and added them.

A spokesman said: "Ever since our first restaurant safely reopened over two weeks ago, vegetarian and vegan products have been available on both our main and Happy Meal menus.

"Before making the decision to reopen, we carried out a number of tests to ensure we were able to maintain social distancing."

"It became clear during the testing phase that Veggie Dippers could be prepared safely, which resulted in them being added to the limited menu before any restaurant reopened.

"We look forward to welcoming back more of our customers next week, when 1019 restaurants will be reopening across the UK and Ireland."
