McDonald's accused of hating the North as it reopens 33 southern drive-thrus

Fast food fans in the South East were celebrating today as McDonald's reopened dozens of its drive-thus in and around London.

But others were left wondering why they'd been left out.

Branches opened in Befordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Suffolk, Hertforshire, Kent, London and Surrey - but nothing further north than Peterborough.

One frustrated McFan tweeted: "Why does McDonald's hate the north?"

Others felt the same.

"You do realise there's people north of Peterborough?" one user added.

A third wrote: "Couldn't have opened one a bit more north east could ya?"

Another added: "Seriously? Still nothing in the north? Are we non-existent?"

So how did they decide which to reopen, and which to keep closed for the time being?

The decision was made based on where they are in relation to the distribution centres.

A McDonald's spokeswoman told Mirror Online: “We're taking our time to reopen in a way helps everyone stay safe including our suppliers.

"This means the first 44 pilot restaurants are close to one of our distribution centres as we prepare our supply chain for reopening.

"We are working hard to expand our restaurant reopenings to all Drive-Thrus across the UK and Ireland by early June.”

The good news is that Big Mac fans in other parts of the country shouldn't have long to wait, with the company aiming to get all drive-thrus open by early June.

In the meantime, here are all the branches of McDonald's now serving customers again in the UK - broken down by whether you can drive to them, order on Uber Eats or both.

No restaurant is currently letting people dine-in.
