McDONALD Jones Stadium could have its capacity under coronavirus restrictions doubled after the state government announced a relaxing for selected stadiums from October 1.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced on Thursday that Bankwest Stadium and Stadium Australia would be able to host 50 per cent of their actual capacity from next month under COVID-safe plans.

She said the Events Taskforce and NSW Health are working on plans to increase the capacity to add the Turton Road venue, WIN Stadium, Ken Rosewall Arena and Penrith Stadium to the list.

The changes are attributed to updated health advice, and are capped at 40,000 spectators.

They also allow only for ticketed and seated-only events.

A detailed plan for the Sydney Cricket Ground is under review by health authorities.

"Our number one priority is the health and safety of the people of NSW, however it is no secret we're also focused on firing up the economy," Ms Berejiklian said.

"Safely allowing more fans at in-demand major sporting events will bring enjoyment, employment and help stimulate the NSW economy."

Spectators are expected to don masks when they are not seated, including on public transport and while walking to and from their seats.

The government said spectators would sit in different zones, use different entrances and exits, and frequent separate hospitality and amenity areas.

Venue staffing levels will also be at 100 per cent to prevent queues.
