Mayor steps down following assault allegations

Whyalla mayor Lyn Breuer will appear in court on March 5.

Whyalla mayor Lyn Breuer has taken a one-week leave of absence from council to seek legal advice, after she was accused of assault.

Ms Breuer is accused of assaulting high-profile Whyalla local Angela Antonio, the wife of Whyalla councillor and SA Best candidate for Giles Tom Antonio at Remembrance Day commemorations last year.

In a written statement, council acknowledges a report has been made about the assault allegations but has refused to comment, saying it is a police matter.

"These events have no bearing on the running of the city, operations at council offices or regular council services," council CEO Chris Cowley said.

"It is business as usual for the council."

Ms Breuer has been interviewed by police about the matter, and will appear in court on March 5, but is yet to be formally charged.

She strenuously denies the allegations and intends to defend herself against any charges.

Assault allegedly sparked by photo opportunity

The assault was allegedly sparked by Ms Breuer objecting to Ms Antonio being in a photo with her.

It is understood Ms Breuer and current Giles MP Eddie Hughes demanded they be included in a photo with Ms Antonio and soldiers.

It is alleged Ms Breuer then shoved Ms Antonio out of the way, bringing her to tears.
