Mayor Sadiq Khan 'in close touch' with Met leaders after day of violent incidents in London

The Mayor of London is in "close touch" with Metropolitan Police leaders after a spate of violent incidents in the capital in recent days, his spokesman has said.

There were three killings and a double shooting on the streets of the capital in the 24 hours between Monday and Tuesday afternoon.

“The Mayor’s thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones to violence in recent days and he is in close touch with Met leaders," a spokesman for Sadiq Khan said on Wednesday.

"Sadiq is clear that one death is one too many and is determined to continue to do all he can to support the police and partners to be tough on violence, crime and its complex causes."

One man was killed and two others, including a boy aged 14, were wounded in a triple stabbing in Uxbridge on Monday.

Dogwalker Wayne Broadhurst, 49, died of his injuries after the attack in Midhurst Gardens at about 5pm.

Neighbours have described how they stepped in to save the life of another man who was left with life-changing injuries following the assault.

Safi Dawood, a 22-year-old Afghan national, has been charged with murder and attempted murder.

A 42-year-old woman was stabbed to death in Brixton on Monday.

Police were called to a home in McCormick House, Tulse Hill at 5pm following reports of a man with a knife.

Robert Sabat, 59, of no fixed address, has been charged with murder and threatening a person with an offensive weapon in relation to the case.

Two men are in a stable condition in hospital after a double shooting on a residential street in Bow on Monday night.

Emergency services were called to St Stephen’s Road in Tower Hamlets shortly before 9.20pm.

Met detectives launched a murder investigation after a man was killed in Lewisham on Tuesday.

Messiah Robb, 20, was stabbed in Benin Street at about 3.20pm. He later died in hospital.

Mr Robb's mother said: "The loss of Messiah has left a hole in our hearts which will never be filled."

A spokesman for Sir Sadiq added: “Record funding from the Mayor for the police is revitalising visible neighbourhood policing across our city, strengthening the Met’s ability to go after the worst perpetrators and supporting a targeted approach to tackling violence in hotspot areas.

“Alongside that, the Mayor’s Violence Reduction Unit continues to lead on prevention and intervention work in our communities - providing investment, support and opportunities for young Londoners who need it most.

“The Mayor will continue leading from the front to strengthen collective efforts to tackle violence in all its forms to deliver a safer London for all.”
