Mayor of Seoul found dead after leaving heartbreaking note for daughter

The mayor of South Korean capital Seoul has been found dead in a park after a criminal complaint was lodged against him, police said.

Mayor Park Won-soon's body was discovered nearly 24 hours after he left a heartbreaking message for his daughter.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency found his body at Mt Bugak in northern Seoul - close to where his phone signal was last detected during a late night search.

He was reported missing by his daughter yesterday.

There was no sign of foul play, police have said - before revealing that a criminal complaint had been made about him before his death.

The Yonhap news agency said a former secretary of Park had filed a complaint on Wednesday over alleged incidents of sexual harassment.

Park, who had been mayor since 2011, had been tipped to be a future presidential candidate in the country's 2022 elections.

He reportedly left a "will-like" voice message for his daughter before he vanished.

The city had been the epicentre of South Korea's coronavirus outbreak earlier this year, although social distancing measures have since been relaxed.

Hundreds of police losing drones had been involved in the search to find him.

His daughter reported him missing at 5.17pm yesterday, saying his phone was off and that he had left a message "like a will", according to Yonhap news agency.

Park left the official residence at around 10.40am, having cancelled a policy meeting that was scheduled for this morning.

Park, who has been the mayor of Seoul since 2011, played a vocal role in the huge Candlelight Demonstrations that helped lead to the ouster of former President Park Geun-hye in 2017.

As mayor of a city of nearly 10 million people, Park is one of the most influential politicians in the country and has played a high-profile role in its response to the coronavirus pandemic.
