Mayor of Rushcliffe apologises for saying 'Santa will be too busy' at Christmas lights switch-on

A Nottinghamshire councillor has apologised after complaints were raised about parts of a speech given at a Christmas light switch-on.

Families turned out in force for the light switch-on in West Bridgford on Saturday, November 23.

Conservative councillor and mayor of Rushcliffe, Christine Jeffreys hosted and led a mass countdown for the switch-on moment.

But some parents raised concerns after the event over councillor Jeffreys' speech.

She allegedly informed children that Santa was going to be 'too busy' and 'mum and dad' would be leaving presents under the tree instead.

The councillor received backlash for the comments on social media.

Responding to the complaints, Mrs Jeffreys said: “I apologise unreservedly for the upset I have caused to those who attended the Lights Switch On.

“Some of my words were said in error. I am deeply apologetic to anyone who was affected by what I said.”

Following the lights being illuminated on Bridgford Road, Central Avenue and Gordon Road there was also a firework display.

Councillor Jeffreys said previously: "Such events are a great opportunity to showcase everything our local economy has to offer and we as a council are keen to promote the successful businesses across Rushcliffe at this busy time of year.

“I would encourage everyone to come along and support their local businesses and traders for this fabulous start to the festive season."
