Mayor of Mexican Border City Backs Trump Administration's Deportation Policies: 'House Cleaning'

Nogales mayor Juan Francisco Gim Nogales

Juan Francisco Gim Nogales, mayor of the Mexican border city of Nogales, Sonora, expressed support for the Trump administration's deportation strategy, describing it as a necessary "house cleaning."

In an interview with Fox News, Gim Nogales said "the United States is doing house cleaning with its immigration policy." "And maybe later they'll say 'Now let's recruit, but under my new rules.' I believe that's what President Trump is doing, and I believe it's the right thing."

The mayor went on to praise Trump's approach of relocating deported migrants to distant locations rather than near the border, calling it an effective way to end the cycle of reentry attempts:

"[Trump had to] break with the vicious cycle of deporting them, and then they come back and then deporting them, they come back [again] - that's over," he said. "I see that as very good. And that in the future benefits a country's economies. So, that's why there are no mass deportations, because [Trump] made the decision to do it differently. And I think it's right"

Although Gim Nogales said he was prepared to receive 2,000 to 3,000 migrants daily in anticipation of mass deportations, he noted that the actual number since February 4 has averaged some 60 per day.

In related news, the mayor inaugurated over the weekend a new early warning system in Nogales designed to provide mass alerts during emergencies such as floods, developed with support from U.S.-based organizations, as reported by El Diario de Sonora.

Connected via satellite to the University of Arizona in Tucson, will help deliver real-time alerts to residents. "We now have cutting-edge technology. Five new monitoring devices will soon be installed in strategic locations to provide more precise information during emergencies," he said.
