Mayor of Liverpool Joanne Anderson tests positive for Covid

Mayor of Liverpool Joanne Anderson has tested positive for Covid-19.

The new city leader, who was elected to her position in May, is at home, where she will carry out some of her duties.

A council statement said that the Mayor has contracted the virus even though she was following social distancing guidelines, wearing a face covering, and had received both doses of the Covid vaccination.

In her own statement, Mayor Anderson said: “I’m feeling tired at the moment, but I’m relieved that I made sure that I was fully vaccinated as soon as possible or the symptoms could have been much worse."

On Twitter, she added: "Feeling very lucky to have had both jabs. I urge everyone to keep being sensible and to get the vaccine as soon as you can so we can keep each other safe."

She then highlighted information about where people can drop in for their first and second jabs in Liverpool.

Council colleagues and fellow councillors have wished Mayor Anderson well and said they were hoping she makes a speedy recovery.

Mayor Anderson made history in May as she became the first black female leader of a major UK city and Liverpool's first female leader.

She replaced Joe Anderson (no relation) as Mayor of the City after he stepped down following his arrest in a corruption investigation.
