Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham said he would not give Donald Trump a state visit if he were in charge.
Mr Burnham also gave his backing to protesters attending a rally against Trump in Cathedral Gardens this evening.
He said his comments as the President of the United States of America touched down in Stansted for his three-day visit to the UK on Monday morning.
Asked whether he thinks it's 'right' for the red carpet to be rolled out for President Trump in an interview on Radio Manchester, Mr Burnham said 'personally not'.
"We've got enough chaos going on in the country haven't we at the moment.
"It seems to me we could do without all of this. I would not give this president a state visit.
"A state visit should be for somebody who has done things to unify the world and obviously this President has done the opposite.
"I don't think this is going to be something that will bring people together. I think it will cause a lot of protest and division.
"We've got people sleeping in the street across the country and we are throwing all of this money at this visit.
"I don't think it's right."
The Manchester Demonstration: Together Against Trump rally will be held at 6pm tonight at Cathedral Gardens.

Speaking to Darryl Morris on Radio Manchester on Monday, Mr Burnham said he won't be attending the rally as he 'has something else' in his diary.
But he said he is 'in spirit' with those attending.

Before he even touched down at Stansted airport, President Trump had already caused controversy.
He tweeted an angry message about London Mayor Sadiq Khan, calling him a 'stone cold loser'.

At 8.51AM, the President tweeted: "@SadiqKhan, who by all accounts has done a terrible job as Mayor of London, has been foolishly “nasty” to the visiting President of the United States, by far the most important ally of the United Kingdom.
"He is a stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London, not me."
The London Mayor has long been a vocal critic of Mr Trump.
