Mayor of Durham gets set to take on charity skydive

The Mayor of Durham is set to take on a skydive challenge in aid of the Royal British Legion.

Coun John Lethbridge, who is preparing to hand back his chain of office after almost a year in the job, is due to jump out of a plane as one of his last official acts in May.

He chose the organisation as his official charity after taking up the position last year to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

"I had to choose a charity for my year as mayor, that was the Royal British Legion (RBL) and so far I think we're in excess of £10,000 raised so far," he told today's (Wednesday, March 27) meeting of Durham County Council.

"I'm now to do a skydive in order to help raise funds for this charity."

A member of the RBL suggested the idea of a skydive to Coun Lethbridge, who is also chairman of the county council, agreed after 'some serious consideration'.

The council's next mayor is due to take over at the next full council meeting in May.

Coun Lethbridge replaced Coun Bill Kellett last year, who helped raise about £16,000 for his chosen good cause, the Great North Air Ambulance.
