PORT Stephens mayor Ryan Palmer will implore fellow councillors at tomorrow night's meeting to back a $4000 donation to Japanese sister city Tateyama.
Cr Palmer has called for each ward to contribute $1000 alongside the same amount from mayoral funds to help rebuild schools damaged in a natural disaster.
"On September 9 Chiba prefecture including our sister city ... was hit by Typhoon Faxai, causing some deaths and damage to over 20,000 homes and other important infrastructure," Cr Palmer's mayoral minute to Tuesday night's meeting states.
"Following the super storm which hit Port Stephens ... in April 2015, the Tateyama International Exchange Association donated $4133.39 to assist in recovery.
"The funds were passed on to Dungog Shire Council to spend in their local government area, which experienced greater devastation than that which hit Port Stephens."
Typhoon Faxai left 934,000 households without power, killing three people and injuring 147.
The agricultural damage it caused has been estimated at more than $387 million.
November marks 10 years of the sister city relationship between Tateyama and Port Stephens.
