Mayor Andy Burnham calls on the Football Association to 'suspend' VAR, calling it a 'nitpickers' charter'

Mayor Andy Burnham has waded into the politics of football by calling on the FA to 'suspend' VAR.

The video assistant referee system is never far from the headlines and was involved in a number of controversial decisions again over the weekend.

Calling VAR a 'nitpickers' charter', Mr Burnham said the Football Association should 'initiate a review' - and his comments have sparked a lively social media debate.

Writing on Twitter, he said: "Was initially in favour of VAR as I thought it would stop refs favouring the big teams.

"But it's a nitpickers' charter.

"You can't referee all games from an industrial estate in Uxbridge and current madness can't carry on all season.

"Football Association needs to suspend it and initiate a review."

The VAR overruled on-pitch official Stuart Attwell on two separate occasions in the first-half of Manchester's United game with Norwich City at Carrow Road.

There was a two minute wait before United's first of two penalties were awarded.

Both were missed but United ran out 3-1 winners.

In total, VAR awarded four penalties and ruled on a red car over the weekend fixtures, with controversial decisions also coming during the Arsenal and Everton games.

Mr Burnham's comments were widely shared on Twitter.

Replying to one poster, he said he also didn't understand why pitch-side monitors aren't used in the Premier League as they were in the World Cup.

Match of the Day pundits also had their say.

Gary Lineker called for fans to be able to hear discussions like rugby union.

He tweeted: "Should be on screen and the conversations between VAR and the referee should be heard both at the ground and on television.

"It's presently shambolic and destroying the football experience. Needs a rethink."
